Some books entertain you. The good ones make you homesick for places that never existed.

You finish the last page of a series and everybody else apparently expects you to just go about your day. Excuse me? I lived with those people. I worried about them. I stayed up entirely too late because of their terrible decisions. And now you’re telling me they’re simply no longer part of my life?

That kind of reader is a Book Witch.

There are the books we’ve read three times, the ones we swear we’re getting to next, the slightly suspicious stack beside the bed, and the ones we bought because apparently owning a book about herbs, folklore, mythology, moon phases, poisonous plants, or some other oddly specific subject counts as having a plan.

This design grew out of that particular kind of reader. The one whose shelves wander freely between literature, history, old remedies, mythology, plants, magic, and whatever subject sent her down a rabbit hole at two o’clock in the morning. Add a raven, candle, witch hat, herbs, spectacles, and enough old books to require structural reinforcement, and apparently we’ve crossed over from reader to Book Witch.

I’m fine with that.

And yes, Banned Books gets the tallest spot in the stack. Not because I collect books about banned books, but because if somebody wants a book removed, restricted, or kept out of somebody else’s hands, I want to know why. That usually tells me at least as much about the people trying to stifle the reading as it does about the book itself.

Every design has a backstory. This one is for the people who still miss characters from books they finished years ago.
