We Mind Our Herbs and Our Business

There are garden people, and then there are garden people who give you the distinct impression that asking too many questions would be a mistake. We Mind Our Herbs and Our Business belongs firmly in the second category.

Miss Sammye is behind her little garden stand surrounded by pots of basil, rosemary, sage, and whatever else she has decided is none of your concern. Her cat is keeping watch nearby, because apparently every questionable little garden operation needs security. At first glance, it is a sweet old-fashioned herb stand. Look a little longer, though, and the message starts sounding less like gardening advice and more like a warning.

That is really where this one came from. I liked the idea of an older Southern woman who is perfectly pleasant as long as everybody stays in their own patch of dirt. She is practical, observant, sweet when she feels like it, and sharp enough to know that peace generally improves when people keep their hands, opinions, and noses where they belong. And no, we are not going to ask exactly what every herb in Miss Sammye’s garden is intended for. Some things are better left between a woman, her plants, and possibly her attorney.

The artwork has that warm, slightly worn garden-market feel I love, with potted herbs, an old wooden stand, Miss Sammye’s raccoon face, and her cat stationed nearby like she has seen some things and will not be discussing them. It is part gardening shirt, part boundary statement, and part quiet little threat wrapped up in something that looks perfectly innocent.

And a quick thank-you to Christal for stepping into the lifestyle photos and bringing exactly the right amount of plant lady energy and barely supervised chaos to this one.

Every design has a backstory. Miss Sammye would tell you hers, but frankly, it is none of your business.
