The older I get, the heller the naw.
There’s a point in a woman’s life when she starts looking around at all the crap she’s been expected to do and wonders exactly when she agreed to become everybody else’s unpaid personal assistant.
Remember birthdays. Make appointments. Know what’s in the refrigerator. Notice what’s running low. Plan meals. Cook meals. Clean up after meals. Keep the house moving. Keep the family moving. Keep track of the details nobody else seems to notice until they haven’t been done.
That’s the mental load. After a while, we start to feel like furniture. The kind of furniture nobody notices until it stops doing what it’s always done.
Women have been carrying an absolutely ridiculous share of that load for generations while being told we were simply better at those things. The older I get, the less convincing that explanation becomes.
This design looks like one of the cross stitch patterns my friends and I were making in the early 80s, back when I was stitching things like Gnome Sweet Gnome and fully invested in the cozy little world of the Gnomes book. Flowers, a decorative border, a cat at the bottom, all the sweet domestic energy you’d expect from something hanging in somebody’s kitchen.
Only this one has had a few decades to think about things.
And now it says heller the naw.
The cat at the bottom is Jen, by the way. She’s my outside cat and has somehow spent her entire life here acting like I’m one bad mood away from a felony. I don't know what's wrong with her, but we love her anyhow.
Every design has a backstory. This one started with an old cross stitch memory and ended with women being entirely over the arrangement.
