Some teams give their fans a reasonable idea of what kind of season they are having. Auburn prefers plot twists.
I’ve been to exactly one Auburn game. It had been raining all day, we parked in a muddy field, and there was no place for women to go to the bathroom until approximately 3,000 of us quietly overthrew the men’s room. While we sat under the open hatch of my Jeep Cherokee waiting for kickoff, two drunk Auburn fans got into a fight, slipped, and rolled around in the mud in front of us. Nobody broke it up. They were too drunk to hurt each other, and frankly, it was the best pregame entertainment available.
So yes, this feels about right.
This one is for the Auburn fan who watches every game with one hand over her heart and the other reaching toward the television as though she might still be able to stop whatever the hell is happening. She knows Auburn can look completely finished and somehow pull off a miracle, or look perfectly safe and find a brand-new way to ruin her afternoon.
Meanwhile, she has snacks, the remote, a pom pom, and a roll of toilet paper within reach. She doesn’t know whether she’ll need the toilet paper to celebrate a win or wipe away tears of disappointment.
Neither does Auburn.
Feral for Football is for the women who understand that watching Auburn is less like following a football team and more like agreeing to an emotional experiment with no control group.
